Day 145: Darwin Waterfront

This morning was epitomised by a torrential downpour that kept us under cover until lunch time. The dust covered streets were soon turned into small creeks and the mud made a journey to the ablutions seem like an ironman challenge. Yet, as always happens in the wet season, the rain soon stopped and the humidity levels rose quickly to dissolve any thoughts that perhaps a cooler afternoon was on its way.

So, with the temperature at 35° C – but feeling like 45° – we headed into the city to explore Darwin’s waterfront. It was obvious that a heap of corporate and government monies had been poured into this precinct since I was last here and the result was just fabulous.

While Deb, in search of cool water, opted for a swim in the lagoon the other kids and I embarked on a trial of the awesome wave pool. As we had already been connoisseurs of the Gold Coast’s wave pools it was going to take something a little extra to impress such validated critics and fortunately we were not let down. The waves were bigger and even broke at certain points offering far more options for the refined swimmer/body-surfers. It even changed wave patterns after each intermittent break.

After the lifeguards and security personnel kicked us out of the pool we took showers and dressed a little more formally for our dinner appointment at Darwin’s SkyCity. The metropolis’ casino offered a very sumptuous all-you-can-eat buffet at ridiculously low prices, so we took their offer up and indulged our waist lines until we were sure there was no room left for anything else.

Then we rolled back to the caravan park and slept a few of the million kilojoules off as we sweated out another Darwin evening.
