Bundaberg: We arrived at Bundaberg and went over to the Bundaberg Distillery, where they make Bundy Rum, and the Bundaberg Brewing Company, where they make ginger beer. First on the agenda was the Bundaberg Distillery. We went on a tour around the distillery learning about the rum-making process, their history and why they have a polar bear as the logo. It was very interesting and the tour guides were very funny.
Throughout the tour we were allowed to taste some stuff like molasses, which is the main ingredient in rum and is a sugarcane waste product. Before we toured the factory I was interested to find out why they had a polar bear as the logo. In the end I discovered it was because they spread the market down Melbourne way where it was cold, so the owners of the distillery choose a polar bear to ‘ward of the wickedest of winter chills’.
After the captivating tour at the distillery we went to the Bundaberg Brewing Co. and did a self guided tour inside The Big Barrel. On the tour I learnt how ginger beer is made, how the company started and many other things. Later, after the tour, we tasted the many beverages they create at the factory. My favourite was the lemon, lime & bitters because it had a crisp, non-sweet taste. We left The Big Barrel and Bundaberg behind and set of for our next stop.
1770: 1770 is where we decided to stay for the next few days. We arrived and set up our caravan as usual, then we sat down and did nothing. In the morning I woke up, as I normally do, and sat outside. While sitting and doing nothing one of the people staying next to us came over and asked me if we liked crab. I answered him with a half-hearted “YES”, not quite understanding why he would ask such a question. I soon found out because he emerged from out of his bus and gave us a full tray of cooked mud crab. We had the crab for dinner and it was delicious.
When we were camped at 1770 I noticed a coconut tree growing next to the beach so I set myself a goal that I would climb it and bring down a coconut. Not long after I had set myself this goal, I was half way up the tree mustering together all my strength to obtain a coconut. Sadly my attempt was in vain for the coconuts were still a little out of reach.
But that wasn’t the end, I wasn’t going to be beaten by a coconut tree. Once again I was up the tree forging ahead to obtain my prize. While I was up the tree it dawned on me that I don’t even like coconuts. However, I had set myself a goal and I was going to accomplish it. I was now nearing the top of the tree, it was so close yet so far, but I just couldn’t do it. I had run out of energy so I slid down the trunk back to the ground. In the end we left 1770 without any coconuts. If I didn’t like them before I loathe them now.
