Day 135: Wonga Beach to Lake Eacham

We were a little late out this morning but not too late that it was worth charging us another night’s fees. Our sluggish start was possibly due to our northern trip coming to an end as we began our descent back home.

Back on the road we drove a short distance back into Mossman and then headed out to the famed Mossman Gorge. A kilometre or so down the road we came across a sign that forbade caravans to continue so we pulled a U-Turn and decided to offload the van in a local government carpark.

Once unhitched we returned to our drive and followed the signs back into the rainforest. The gorge itself was beautiful and the kids and I, apart from Jordan, took a quick dip in the glorious waters that cascaded down the river. It was an ideal setting and after a quick walk along the boardwalk and tracks we were back in the car and soon hitching the van back on.

From there we began our drive across to the Atherton tablelands. The drawcard was the esteemed scenery and the myriad of waterfalls that dotted this part of the landscape.

The drive took us through Mareeba (where we stopped and had lunch), Atherton (where we stopped for some groceries) and finally onto Lake Eacham. Before arriving there we took the scenic detour that led us to the Curtain Fig Tree, the largest Strangler Fig, a few kilometres off the main route.

The tree was enormous having taken over 3 host trees and dominating the landscape around it. We oogled at it’s magnificence for a little while now that we only had a short distance to our night’s stay.
