In Canberra we did lots of things in a few days. There is heaps of stuff to do in Canberra. The first day we went to Floriade and Parliament house. Floriade is a big display of flowers, they use mostly tulips and some daffodils. My dad loves gardening and he really wanted to go and see floriade, I was not really interested to go at first, but when I saw the flowers I liked it because they made interesting patterns. Some of the shapes were instruments and lollipops. There were lots of other displays also, some people were doing acts like juggling and balloon twisting. It was interesting to see areptile display as well, I didn’t expect that at a flower show. I saw lizards and snakes and tortoise and I touched them all, my favourite one was the tortoise because I had never seen one before.
After Floriade we went to see the Old and New Parliament houses. Canberra is the capital of Australia and politicians come from all over the country to meet at Parliament house to discuss plans for running Australia. Australia is a democracy which means that we have people power, because people can vote and choose the politicians. I think it’s a good way to run the country so then the politicians can’t do whatever they want because people won’t vote for them. I liked the new parliament house better than the old one and I am glad they built it, it was very big and there were a lot of security guards. There were two big staircases and it was made out of marble, it was very fancy.
In Canberra we also went to the War memorial and Questacon. I am not sure if I liked the War memorial it was very big and there was a museum of war with lots of things to read and do. It was kind of sad reading about the wars and especially seeing all the names on the wall of the soldiers who have died in war.
There was a section down stairs where you could play in a helicopter and submarine which was very cool, I don’t think I would like to be a soldier at all. Even though they have cool stuff to work with I would not like to go through war.
Finally we went to visit Questacon. Questacon is a science centre. I was really looking forward to going there and I was not disappointed, it was awesome. I really liked the different displays especially one experiment about air pressure. First there was a ball cut in half and a pipe went into the ball to suck the air out. When the air was sucked out you had to try and open the ball, it was very hard to do. Then you could press a button to let the air in and then it was easy enough to open.
Then we went to a rocket show and there was this guy there who was showing us all about different rockets. He asked for volunteers and Emily got chosen to come and blast some rockets. Some of the rockets were balloons and I really liked Rocket #9 because all of these flames were coming out of it. It was my favourite thing about Questacon.
