The Value of a Hot Shower

The Value of a Hot Shower

It’s hard to place a value on the things we often take for granted. A good night’s sleep. Stocked pantry and fridge. Even the freedom to sit and watch the 7 o’clock news.

Yet today I found the value of a hot shower – it’s $62. That’s what it costs to stay in a caravan park overnight for our family. Sixty two flippin’ dollars!

At that rate I could have stayed in my own house for cheaper not confined within a 10m² mobile prison and squashed alongside two hundred other people as though suburbia was a vision of low-density living.

So I reached inside my inner-soul exploring what other benefits I might be deriving from this apparent luxury. Contrasting this experience with the past two nights I had to rack my brain for facilities that we had been lacking.

Then it dawned on me, we could now access washing machines. But wait, they’re coin operated and not included in my sixty-two bucks. Perhaps the toilets are an unrealised asset but even there I’m forced to listen to Elvis blaring perpetually on the roof-mounted PA – they should be paying me to have to listen to that archaic rubbish…

In the distillation of this fee charged upon poor suckers who believe that a warm shower is the quintessential luxury, I’ve now re-assessed my whole belief system. I’m happy to smell. In fact, I can buy a whole lot of deodorant for $62 per day.

Re: showers/cash cost benefit analysis- You just need to think outside the square Stu: Swimming? Taking casual walks through caravan parks when you just happen to have a towel and your toiletries bag? Capitalising on passing showers? Developing a network of friends and acquaintences across the country with decent plumbing? The possibilities are endless.

I like the way you think Marcus. Very creative!

BTW – we’re hoping to get to the Carlton vs Geelong match for Round 21 I think. Sooooo looking forward to seeing a home ground game.

You’re a guru Dave. Great to hear from you. Jordan’s a little sad that you “particularly wanted to say to Levi & Mim” and not him. Keep cool.

Erm, who won the Ashes last year – ??? :)

Am following you on Google maps – no replacement for being there, but …

Can’t work out the distances though. How far have you gone so far?

    • Stuart says:

Fair comment re: the Ashes. We’re still clinging to our past victories.

I hope to update these later tonight so I’ll add the number of kilometres to each overnight stop.

Hi Debbie, Stuart, Jordan, Emily, Levi, Miriam and Grommett

Sounds like you are having lots of fun. Looks like bucket showers could be the way to go instead of $62 hot showers. And who needs hubcaps anyway.

Did you post some photos of the sculptures at Lake Ballard – I couldn’t find any.

Miss you all, lots of love Mum.

    • Deb says:

Hi Mum, Stu said he did put some photo’s on the photo gallery click on day 2. We really enjoyed Lake Ballard, you must put it on your “to see” list when you guys get started on your own travels. I’m not sure Menzies is worth the effort, but you have to go through there to get to the lake. I really like Kalgoorlie, where did we live? … Not close to Hay St I hope!!!
