Miriam’s Week 2: Streaky Bay to Coober Pedy

In Streaky Bay I met a girl called Hannah. She was from Tasmania and she was a nice girl. We played games all afternoon and took “Benny” (another traveller’s pet dog) for walks.

I really liked Streaky Bay because we tried oysters for the first time and it was a cute little place.

Then we went to Pildappa Rock, near the Gawler Ranges. I also met some friends named McKinley and Analiese. They are from NSW and were travelling around Australia, but the opposite way to us.

It was a really long drive to Coober Pedy but we managed it. Along the way we went to Kimba to see the Big Galah and also Wudinna to see the Big Australian Farmer. We also went to Port Augusta and stopped at Woolworths to get some food. I was begging Mum to buy me a magazine but she didn’t let me.

The next day we stopped at a Roadhouse at Pimba for some fuel and then kept going to Coober Pedy. At Coober Pedy I bought some opal from the Bug Lady. We went to this cave place (an underground mine) where there were lots of dummies which showed how people once mined for opal.

The man at the Old Timer’s Mine showed us how the Blower worked. Levi and I got to throw rocks up into the chute. The he showed us some other machines including one that dug up the rock.

We slept at a caravan park which had an underground sleeping cave. It was fantastic.
